MR SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON (1939) B

Frank Capra's classic comedy-drama established Jimmy Stewart as a lead actor in Hollywood. In very stereotypical terms it show the true nature of Washington politics. Payoffs, political bosses, manipulation of the masses by the media and all the rest.

Theme is a little way out where a bumpkin from the woods is nominated for the Senate by the political bosses so that they can get the bills that they favor passed. As expected the bumpkin turns in a real patriot and lets the Senate know . . . in a long filibuster . . . what real down to earth people expect from their Representatives. At the same time he repeats some of the most patriotic speeches by Lincoln, Jefferson and all our past great leaders.

The ending was very abrupt. Interesting to see the depiction of the role of Blacks and women in the film. We've come a long way 70 years.
