LORE (2012) B-

German; subtitles

Years ago  met a Japanese woman tour guide who was in Manchuria when WWII ended. She told a harrowing story of her husband being imprisoned and her difficult return to Japan . . . which included months of marching on dirt roads and groveling for food. Sadly she was rejected by her family when she finally arrived in Japan.

I was touched by her story and sympathized with her plight. This movie presents a similar story (primarily made for German audiences) of the daughter of Nazi parents, arrested by Allied forces, who travels across Germany with her four younger siblings in hopes of reaching their grandmother. She meets a young Jewish refugee along the way who may prove to be their only hope of surviving the harrowing ordeal, in this World War II drama based on Rachel Seiffert's novel,The Dark Room.

Unfortunately, the movie was slow and included many shots of the countryside . . . which added nothing to content of the movie. I was produced is a way that did not allow me to sympathize or emotionally feel for the children as I felt for the Japanese woman. Not because she was of Nazi parents but because there was something missing in the film.
