Because I am not part of the American mainstream of celebrity watchers, I could never understand her popularity. To me, she couldn't act and was always presented to the world a "dumb blond" sex kitten. This special helped me see what the rest of America was fascinated with. Here the "real " Marilyn was explored . . . including her dealings with shrinks and the Actor's Studio. It was so sad that she was really incapable of taking care of herself and had serious mental problems. These mental problems were never fully explored in this piece.
The documentary coincided with the 50th anniversary of her death and presents remarkable footage and audiotapes along with her recently discovered handwritten letters, diaries, notes, poems, journals and notebooks, which set Marilyn's private life against the backdrop of her very public life and loves.
