Classic Movie Review: CHINATOWN (1974) D

Either this movie is really dated or it was bad in the 1970's.  It could also have been made as a showcase for Jack Nickolson or as a shocker that brought to the screen the subject of incest for the first time.  At any rate it was almost impossible to understand the story except that Nickolson was a private eye and there was corruption associated with the LA water department in the 1930's.  Tiresome and boring . . . it tried to be similar to the film noir (Sam Spade) genre of movies.

It is truly amazing that Chinatown was nominated for eleven Oscars, including Picture, Director, Actor, Actress, Cinematography, Art Direction, Costumes, and Score . . . and won the Oscar for BEST SCREENPLAY.  Shows you how the Oscars were and still are just a popularity contest.  Included Faye Dunaway and John Huston in  leading roles.
