Movie Review: FOXCATCHER (2014) B

FOXCATCHER is an unusual movie based on real events.   Somewhat slow but may be worthwhile to watch if you are patient and are sports oriented.

It tells the story of Olympic Gold Medal-winning wrestler Mark Schultz, (who appears to have learning and/or social disabilities)  . . . who sees a way out from the shadow of his more celebrated wrestling brother Dave, and a life of poverty, when he is summoned by a multi-multi-millionaire John DuPont (who appears to be mentally ill) to move onto his estate and train for the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Desperate to gain the respect of his (also screwball and disapproving) mother, DuPont begins "coaching" a world-class wrestling athletic team and, in the process, lures Mark into dangerous habits, breaks his confidence and drives him into a self-destructive spiral. Based on actual events, FOXCATCHER is a story of a very fragile man who pins his hopes (being an Olympic winner) . . . a "somebody". . . on the desperate and naive obsession for greatness and gets hooked by an unstable mentor.

PS.  Not a happy ending.
