CROMWELL (1970) B

This movie is mainly for history buffs.

From Netflix: Richard Harris stars as heroic commoner Oliver Cromwell, who helped wage a bloody battle against King Charles I in a civil war that pitted the Puritan middle class against the decadent English aristocracy during the 17th century. Cromwell, against daunting odds, eventually emerged victorious, while King Charles I suffered the loss of his head.

Cinematography : average, Costuming: magnificent, Acting: very good, Background music: horrid

The movie assumes you are aware of the conflict between the Church of England (Protestants) and Catholics during that time period. In this slant on history, Cromwell is the good guy, bringing representative democracy to England.

From Wikipedia: Cromwell has been a very controversial figure in the history of the British Isles – a dictator to some historians and a hero of liberty to others. In Britain he was elected as one of the Top 10 Britons of all time in a 2002 BBC poll. His measures against Irish Catholics have been characterized by some historians as genocidal or near-genocidal, and in Ireland itself he is widely hated.

Warren is retired and lives in Florida where he runs a foreign movie program for adults. He subscribes to NETFLIX and uses Rotten Tomatoes as one of the sources for selecting movies to review.

Started watching movies at about eight years old and was strongly influenced by "Fantasia" for it's combination of music and fantasy. He was profoundly impacted in his early teen years by the social content in "I AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG".

As a kid he used to enter the movie house in the middle of a double feature and leave when the movie reached the part where he came in. Loved serials and was able to see most double features for ten or twenty-five cents.

A graduate of Columbia University and City College of New York (CCNY), he strongly believes that good movies . . . with mature content . . . are a significant supplement to education and insight into the world around us. No egghead, he also believes that "It's A Wonderful Life", "Young Frankenstein", "The Producers", West Side Story", and "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers" are great films.
