Foreign LanguageThis movie was recommended by a friend or relative . . . I don't remember. Sandy and I could only make it through about 25 minutes before we agreed to give up.
It really gets three F's. One for the technical aspects. It wasn't a regular movie production, but more like a 1950's Playhouse 90 stage play. No music, no transitions, nothing that you would expect to see in today's world of cinematography.
As far as the story is concerned, it presents material about a Jewish MD, Magnus Herschfeld, living in Berlin in the late 1890's. He is homosexual and works to overturn laws existing at the time to ban that practice. Had potential except that this so-called movie had no drama , no tension and the people are not real. BORING. Compare this to AMAZING GRACE which deals with attempts to overturn slavery in the late 1700's in England. They are a universe apart.
But last not least is the god-awful comparison between Albert Einstein and Magnus Herschfeld, Einstein was a super brilliant theoretical physicist, who could put together multiple facts and theories and create new concepts. Magnus was a gay MD who may have been one of the first responsible adults in Germany to fight for a cause and against a law that he believed was unjust. As I see it, their only commonality was that they were both born to Jewish parents.
CORRECTION AFTER POSTING
It just dawned on me that I missed the main point of the THE EINSTEIN OF SEX movie in my review. After thinking about it, the movie looks as if it was produced as a soft porn flick for the gay male community . . . and I reviewed it as a piece that straight people would go to see.
Even though we saw only about a quarter of the movie, we were shown a lot of gratuitous frontal male nudity. Finally in the scene where we totally gave up and pulled the DVD, young (good looking) guys were prancing around naked, doing calisthenics and ballet . . . ostensibly to show how young gays guys could have fun if they were unconstrained from the oppressive law. That scene just didn't make any sense . . . EXCEPT TO SHOW THE BODIES AND GENITALIA OF YOUNG MEN.
