TALK TO HER (2002) D

Spanish, subtitled

Another hyped writer-director Pedro Almodovar put together a story about two men who become unlikely friends . . . based on their love of women who are in comas. (Yea, you read it correctly. Terrific starting point.)

I'm sure all the film critics and 21 year olds taking film courses would think the subject matter and the presentation are profound. However, with some work, It would have been better presented as a Mel Brooks comedy.

Predictable, slow, tedious, no music in background, Would have asked for my money back if I saw it in a theater. I rented it through Netflix at an unnamed persons recommendation.

Others comments about Almodovar

I have not seen this one, but generally, I find Almodovar funny, sometimes wild. He likes these far-fetched situations and plays with gender roles. He started with gay male films and is now into a female perspective. Volver was a superb film.

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown from the 80's is a great favorite but not available on DVD yet. All About My Mother, Volver, and Bad Education are among those we admire. There is another, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! that is also worth seeing. We think that he does a great job with women's roles in particular, and reflects the burgeoning cultural changes that have been occurring since Franco's death and also contrasting it to his youth under Franco's very repressive regime. He has had a huge influence on the three Oscar nominated younger Latino
directors who did Pan's Labryinth, Babel, and Children of Men. (We heard them speak about it)
