LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA (2007) B-

Sorry, I don't agree with the hype associated with this movie that shows that the Japanese people also have families that are concerned about loved ones..

For Japanese audiences B++
For Americans B-

Higher rating for Japanese because they have been in denial for 60 years regarding their responsibility for WWII atrocities. (i.e Korean slave prostitutes, rape of Nanjing, etc.) Maybe this movie will stir that community.

I also hope that this movie is a wake up call to the people who still believe in an authoritarian cultures that send people out to be killed for an emperor, or Allah, or a crazy looking flag.

The one subject that is brought up but not resolved or discussed is the duty of a citizen to fight for a lost and unworthy cause, just because the leaders of your country tell you to do it. (Remember Vietnam).
