XXY (2007) A/B

XXYForeign: Argentina
Spanish subtitles

XXY, or the XXY syndrome is a condition in which males have an extra X sex chromosome . While females have an XX chromosomal makeup, and males an XY, affected individuals have at least two X chromosomes and at least one Y chromosome. The principal effects are development of small testicles and reduced fertility.

A variety of other physical and behavioral differences and problems are common, though severity varies and many boys and men with the condition have few detectable symptoms.

This excellent (A) but slow (B) movie is about people not being able to talk honestly to each other about the syndrome, and the pain and anger that results. In this case the screenwriter doesn't treat truthful family communication as a joke . . . as was done in the recent movie City Island.

This film examines a tough subject. How do the parents of a teenage intersexed person cope with the problems of growing up in a world that hardly accepts gays, and how do you do the right thing for your child?

In this movie, Alex, the teenager, has racing hormones, and she is trying to figure out her own sexuality . . . never mind deciding on what gender she wants to be. Excellent acting.
