CHARLIE WILSON'S WAR (2007) B

If you liked the TV series, "The West Wing", you will probably like this movie. They were both written by Aaron Sorkin, who loves to create fast political action with big gaps in the logic, flow and  coherence of a story.

People mumble and they talk about things only "insiders" know about. You are supposed to be awed because you are in the company of these cool and powerful people. I for one, don't like to be talked down to.

That said, this story is about a piece of modern history (late 1970's to late 1980's) that remains somewhat of a mystery to me. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and our support of the mushadeem (that Ben Laden belonged to) that bloodied the nose of the Soviet Union and helped bring down that country.

The theme of the movie is that no one in government was dealing with the invasion and it was primarily thwarted by the effort of hard drinking congressman from Texas and a CIA outcast. If you believe this, then I have a bridge to sell you
that goes between Manhattan Island and Brooklyn.

The movie did, however, peek my interest and I may do some more study into;
1. Why the Russians invaded that god-forsaken land (cover story is
they want a pathway to the Indian Ocean). Were they just "dumb".
2. What was our Cold War Strategy in light of this invasion.
3. Did we understand, at all, about the Islamic revolution taking
place in all the Muslim countries at that time.
