VICKY CHRISTINE BARCELONA (2008) A

A new creative and insightful romantic film written and directed by Woody Allen about the interrelationship between a 40 something, wealthy and romantically desirable artist and two attractive young women who are "discovering themselves" during a summer in Spain. It centers around the fundamental conflict between the emotional drives of both middle aged males and younger women.

Men basically want continual romances with (as many as possible) attractive 20 year old women and these same women want to be emotionally swept away by a prince charming who is wealthy, bright, creative, adores her, has a wonderful circle of friends, will take care of her, is sexually attractive and will provide her with a nest where she can care for her young.

How can this conflict ever work out, you ask. By the suppression of the men's, needs which usually takes the form of work, affairs or watching sporting events on TV when he is home in the nest . . . the nest he never wanted. He wanted many mistresses!!

Well acted . . . especially by Javier Bardem. The young women are VERY, VERY attractive. So vulnerable, so needy, so beautiful.

As an added element, Woody Allen skewers the pseudo-successful, self centered and boring people in our society who are enamored with the latest toys that there money can buy. These are the same people who send Christmas time notes to friends and relatives about events in their family and leave out the good parts such as the brother-in-law that was arrested for stabbing their sister.

If you ever doubted that you married the "right" person, you will find this movie very interesting. Be careful . . . it may be painful to revisit that subject.
