I held off seeing this movie because I thought is was "just another" Holocaust movie that had been produced after Schindler's List was released. Another wretched tale of Jews being led to slaughter in Europe in the 1940's. In truth there are millions of individual Holocaust stories that can be told. Before viewing this movie I learned from others that this film was about an eight year-old son of a Nazi officer whose promotion takes the family to a desolate area. Here the boy finds a friend his own age, who lives in a parallel universe ( in striped prison garb) on the other side of a barbed wire fence . . . within a concentration camp.
This movie has an ugly tale to tell, but it was produced and directed (with the help of the BBC) in a suburb manner. Acting, screenwriting, music, cinematography . . . all A or A+.
Sandy saw the movie from the personal level . . . where you relate (and have feelings) for the people as if they were real. I was detached from the narrative because I saw it in a different and more horrifying light.
To me, the story represents one more representation of the grotesque history of man and the organizations he creates. Mass killing, maiming, injustice, conquest, greed, torture, cruelty, slavery, etc., etc. Oh yes I know the drill. Look how far we have come. I, for one, am not convinced we have progressed! Just look at the organized killing and slaughter in the 20th century.
As I see it, THIS IS THE ISSUE OF OUR TIME. Can the human race change it's ways from it's own evolution. I don't believe too many people feel as I do because this negative concept of man is too frighting to accept . . . so we do very little to change, and continue to build "defense" forces to pursue preemptive wars.
