This movie is about a the love relationship between a severely disturbed 30ish year old man (Joaquin Phoenix) and two young women . . . both of who are terribly, terribly needy and somewhat self-destructive. (Who else would have an serious relationship with a nut case who is suicidal and is living home with his parents because he can't make it on his own).Acting by all and characterizations are excellent. The story on the other hand, is something you really don't want to be a witness to unless you enjoy being an armchair shrink or you are interested in watching weak and crazy people going through their motions in life. (I enjoy seeing crazies an the screen).
One portion of the story is somewhat unrealistic . . . and that has to do with the total blindness of some people in recognizing the depth of emotional problems of the sick young man. You don't offer to give your daughter's hand in marriage and part of a going business, unless you are totally, totally desperate.
Movie also shows that you can enjoy even more exciting sex when your feeling are raised to super highs by mental illness.
