Today, music is used extensively to supplement the emotional dynamic of the film. Sixty-five years ago, in this type of mystery/romantic piece, music was used to promote a new song, show the extended capability of the star . . . or possible bring people to the theater who wanted to see more than a drama.
A major problem with the movie is the heavy handed acting and unrealistic narrative. Maybe the average person who went to the movies in the fourties were not aware of inconsistencies in the plots. When I was a kid, many times I came in the middle of a movie and left when I saw all the parts. Obviously the screenplay wasn't too important.
The major stars in this movie were
Rita Hayworth Born Oct. 17, 1918, in Brooklyn, N.Y., she came from a famous family of Spanish dancers, and it was as part of their act ("The Dancing Casinos") that she attracted Hollywood's attention.
George Macready an American stage, film, and television actor who was noted for playing polished villains. His first film was Commandos Strike at Dawn in 1942, featuring Paul Muni. His voice and appearance, including a scar on his cheek (the result of a car accident), made him ideal as a cultured villain.
Glen Ford. After receiving several nominations, Ford finally won a Golden Globe for his performance in Frank Capra's Pocketful of Miracles (1961) and went on to star alongside a young Ron Howard in The Courtship of Eddie's Father (1963) and as the Man of Steel's mortal father in Superman: The Movie (1978).
