Foreign Movie Review: OMAR (2013) B-

Inline image 1
This movie was a letdown considering that it was one of the 5 movies nominated for the 2014 Academy Award for Foreign Films.

This Palestinian film was first rate in terms of cinematography and acting, however, the premise and story line were unclear.  It does show, however the lying, double dealing, ugliness and effect that 47 years of Israeli occupation has on the people on both sides of the wall.

Partially from Rotten Tomatoes:
In this movie a young Palestinian baker routinely climbs over the separation wall to meet up with his girl friend. By night, he's either a freedom fighter or a terrorist (you decide) and is ready to risk his life to strike at the Israeli military with his childhood friends Tarek and Amjad. Arrested after killing an Israeli soldier for no reason at all (which could only get them in trouble) and tricked into an admission of guilt by association, he agrees to work as an informant. So begins the dangerous game he plays with his Israeli handler to betray his cause . . . where no one can trust the other side.  With this movie Palestinian filmmaker Hany Abu-Assad (Paradise Now) created a  drama about the insoluble and horrible moral dilemma facing those on the front lines of a conflict that shows no sign of letting up.
