DocumentaryI went to see this movie expecting to see a regular film. It turned out that this piece was a documentary about the life of Sholem Aleichem . . . with experts in Yiddish Literature talking over stills of the world he lived in Russia in the late 1800's. Something that you would expect to see on PBS. It was very good but not great. Just a very small (but important) piece of the history of the Jewish people.
(From other reviews). Sholem Aleichem was a rebellious genius who created an entirely new literature and whose stories became the basis of the Broadway musical, "Fiddler on the Roof." Plumbing the depths of a Jewish world locked in crisis and on the cusp of profound change, he captured that world with brilliant humor. Aleichem was not just a witness to the creation of a new modern Jewish identity, but one of the very men who forged it.
