SIDE EFFECTS (2013) C-

Although this movie is advertised as a "smart, clever thriller with plenty of disquieting twists", it fails to be neither smart nor clever nor thrilling. It does have a number of twists, however, that are sure to leave at least 50% of the audience scratching their heads and wondering what went on as they leave the theater.

In the movie you get to meet many Psychiatrists and hear about all the latest psychotropic drugs, so before you go you should do some homework on recent advances in drug therapy for depression. But it's biggest problem is that the plot has more holes than a pound of Swiss cheese. If you are interested in these failures in the plot, send me an email.

This was from another reviewer: This thing is an absolute mess. The critics have utterly missed the boat on this one. A "thriller"? If you consider long, drawn out exposition and 40 minutes of meanderings and nothingness a "thrill", you've hit the jackpot. The film is in serious need of proper editing. It also runs a bit off the rails toward the end, losing the audience, as Jude Law's character's motivations become utterly opaque and confused. He behaves a bit schizophrenically, at once deviating from paranoid conspiracy theorist to seeming malicious schemer and sociopath doctor.
