I knew immediately this movie was going to be some avant garde thing when I opened the box and found a pamphlet that described the various scenes of the movie. If you need a pamphlet to understand the movie . . . you are in trouble.
I got about one third of the way through and then gave up. It takes place in Hong Kong. The photography is erratic . . . smearing of the pictures of people running, and the use of hand held cameras. But that was only half of the story. Because there was no coherent plot or storyline. Drug dealing, killings, a cop who continues to whine and eat pineapple because he was jilted. Just terrible. I sure the critics loved it for it's "experimental nature".
From Rotten Tomatoes: I was right! 90% of the critics loved it.
These were the words from the general review. Wong Kar-Wai's movie about two love-struck cops is filmed in impressionistic splashes of motion and color. The first half deals with Cop 223, who has broken up with his girlfriend of five years. He purchases a tin of pineapples with an expiration date of May 1 each day for a month. By the end of that time, he feels that he will either be rejoined with his love or that it too will have expired forever. The second half shows Cop 663 dealing with his breakup with his flight attendant girlfriend. He talks to his apartment furnishings until he meets a new girl at a local lunch counter.
