German Subtitles
This is one of the most politically and socially important movie/series produced in the last 70 years. It's positive reviews in Germany . . . and it's showing to large audiences indicates (to some degree) how the present generation of Germans have come to grips with Nazi German thinking and actions during WWII. The Economist stated that hardly any German TV drama ever caused so much public debate.
It has been equated to the impact of the series "Roots", and the recent movie, "12 Years A Slave" had on the psyche of the people on United States. Unfortunately we still have not produced movies that have dealt with ugliness of the Native American vs. White Man experience. Also the Japanese have not come to grips with their dealing in Asia during the 1920' to 1940's. That debate in Japan is still going on.
The story line in the movie . . . which is much less important than it's meaning in political terms, is set in Berlin and the Eastern Front with Russia during World War II. "Generation War" follows five friends through the war years. Brothers in the same battalion, a Jewish man who goes undercover and a nurse and a sexy singer. They all experience quick disillusionment with their roles in Hitler's war. Reconnecting through a series of wildly coincidental events that make it seem like the entire war was fought by these five people, they ultimately learn that those who fail to stand up to evil become part of it.
