THE MARTIAN (2015) AA++

Great movie.  But what a terrible name for a film.  I expected some dumb science fiction story and found  an exciting, suspensive, thrilling human experience that I didn't want to end.  It didn't hurt that the leading man was Matt Damon and director was Ridley Scott.

From the promotional material:
During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring "the Martian" home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney's safe return.

Other reviews:
• The Martian is the kind of sci-fi movie I've been wanting for a long time-one where science takes center stage and the wondrous, awe-inspiring things that happen all stem from people solving problems using their brains, working collaboratively.
The Martian is a brilliantly designed entertainment that combines all the intricacies of good speculative fiction with a surprisingly lighthearted tone of survival.
As the movie celebrates the astronaut's industry and intelligence (and the smarts of his NASA colleagues), it offers a riposte to the shortsightedness and science-denying attitudes of those unwilling to invest in solutions to the Earth's own dilemmas.

One last comment on a more serious note: The movie shows hundreds of million of people on earth excited about the rescue of one man in space.  Also everyone who will watch this will get emotionally involved with the people depicted on the screen.  How come these same people don't really care about millions of REAL PEOPLE on earth that are sick, starving, an  being treated like animals in many countries in this world?
