Movie Review: TRUMBO (2015) A

A good but not a great movie.  For anyone who is aware of mid 20th century political history in the United States, this is not  a new story.  It's about "blacklisting" of people in the business of making movies and TV shows at the start of the Cold War with Russia in 1947.

Because many people (all over the world ) lost faith in the capitalist system during the depression of the1930's, many joined the Communist as well as socialist political parties.  Because of poor reporting from Russia, and Russia being an ally with us during WWII, many of these people were totally unaware of the failings of the communist system and the genocidal actions of Stalin.

As a political weapon the Republicans implied that the people who joined the communist party were traitors to our country.

Dalton Trumbo  was Hollywood's top screenwriter until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs. TRUMBO recounts how Dalton used words and wit to win two Academy Awards and expose the absurdity and injustice of the blacklist, which entangled everyone from gossip columnist Hedda Hopper  to John Wayne, Kirk Douglas and Otto Preminger.

Personally, I felt, the actors who took on the roles of the real people I knew and saw on the screen didn't fit my reality . . . and I couldn't suspend disbelief.  Also, the total story of why many joined the communist party was never discussed.
