This 3 hour epic depicts the history of an upper-middle class
Hungarian Jewish family from about the 1850's to the 1970's. I'm not
sure who the producers expected to reach with this non-insightful
story of people intertwined with history. Some members of the family
sell there soul the the people in power (the rightists), and others go
hard left without realizing that it's not only the economic order that
counts, but also the freedoms people have.
To add the human element, the movie shows some family members seeing
everything coming from god, others have affairs with relatives, others
are in need more love, others can't give more love, others assimilate,
others become functionaries in the communist state, etc., etc. The
family . . . who had the money but weren't savvy enough to get out
after the Nazis come to power (Elie Wiesel in "Night " talks about
this also), are decimated and only a few remain.
The movie ends in Budapest in the 1970's when one of the family
members discovers the "truth" after being released from prison. I
really expected it to end in 2006 with one of the family members
tossing cluster bombs into south Lebanon.
This was not a happy movie.
