THE SAVAGES (2007) B+/D

This disappointing story (and I use the word loosely) is primarily
about three months in the life of a young (39 year old) women who is depressed, alone, needy, barely capable of supporting herself and essentially lost in world. The "story" of this movie gets a D.

If I were to go out to dinner with her . . . and she would tell me this
"story", I would probably never go near her again. Deadly and very painful.

Thank god she doesn't have children. It is possible that with many years of psychotherapy and drug therapy she could at least hold down a job and make some friends. That's the sequel to the movie that we will see in 2010. When she recovers.

The redeeming quality of this film is the acting, which get a B+

During the the three month period of her life, she has to deal with a
brother who she hasn't seen for many years and her demented father.
The brother at least holds down a job and can take on some
responsibility, which is necessary when dealing with elderly parents
who need nursing care.

He has a problem with a relationship with a Polish women and the story line tries to connect the siblings adult relationship problems to their traumatic childhood. The screenwriter probably cut most of the classes of Freud 101 in college and read about this sort of connection in Science Times. Deep stuff.
