THE WIRE: SEASON 1 (2003) C-

This HBO series, which has now moved into it's last season, has been hyped as a great success story. I saw the first three episodes of Season 1. Rented from Netflix. Set in Baltimore, the plot revolves around a so-called police investigation involving drugs. All very ugly.

If the motive was to show that our WAR ON DRUGS is a political hoax, then this series gets an A+. However, if anyone living in the US doesn't know that already . . . I feel very badly for them.

Formula stuff: Dumb and lazy cops, divorced and hardened cop hero, smart women cop, jaded police management, black drug dealers ranging in age from 16 to 35, inner city (project) degradation. You can add the rest.

As far as the production is concerned, a major failure is that the actors speak in foreign tongues . . . Ebonics and cop talk. I believe the producers use garbled language to cover up poor screen writing and lack of a real plot.
