KABIE:OUR MOTHER (2008) A+
Japanese; subtitles
Very special movie about a "liberal" Japanese family during WWII where the "thought police" patrolled the communities. (Big Brother revisited). Probably the first movie I have seen that has dealt with the ugly authoritarian regime that existed in Japan at that time. It takes about 50 years for stories that tell the truth of regular families living in these times. War was a horror for all the innocents that were bombed , burned and scarred forever. The war was horrid for the soldiers in the field but this movie tell the tale of an innocent family caught in Japan at that time. And it didn't even deal with the firebombing of the larger Japanese cities.
From NETFLIX:When her husband is jailed for radical scholarship and accused of being a Communist, Kayo Nogami (Sayuri Yoshinaga) faces the daunting task of raising two daughters -- and enduring the biting cruelties of neighborhood gossip -- all on her own. Yoji Yamada directs this 1940s period piece set in the shadow of a rising tide of Japanese nationalism, a heartfelt family drama based on the writings of Teruyo Nogami.
