Coal Miner's Daughter

As many of you know, this movie is about the singer Loretta Lynn's rise to the queen of country music from her hardscrabble upbringing in Appalachia. A classic rags to riches story.

When I first saw it back in the early 1980's, I thought it was sensational. One of the best.

Considering that it was created almost 30 years ago, the acting, music, cinematography is still excellent. The weakness I saw today was that the screen play progresses in a straight line (linearly) from her start in rural Kentucky to her success as a performer. At the end of the movie we see her and her family living happily ever after. No real drama.

In addition, the movie shows that her life was full . . . with children, friends, interesting husband, mental problems, recovery, etc., etc. Because these aspects of her life could not be covered in detail within the 2 hour movie time limit, I felt that the movie was incomplete and I was cheated. I would have loved to see the other three or four hours of the outtakes.

Warren is retired and lives in Florida where he runs a foreign movie program for adults. He subscribes to NETFLIX and uses Rotten Tomatoes as one of the sources for selecting movies to review.

Started watching movies at about eight years old and was strongly influenced by "Fantasia" for it's combination of music and fantasy. He was profoundly impacted in his early teen years by the social content in "I AM A FUGITIVE FROM A CHAIN GANG".

As a kid he used to enter the movie house in the middle of a double feature and leave when the movie reached the part where he came in. Loved serials and was able to see most double features for ten or twenty-five cents.

A graduate of Columbia University and City College of New York (CCNY), he strongly believes that good movies . . . with mature content . . . are a significant supplement to education and insight into the world around us. No egghead, he also believes that "It's A Wonderful Life", "Young Frankenstein", "The Producers", West Side Story", and "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers" are great films.
